Programs and Services
The American Military Veterans Foundation (AMMILVETS) was originally founded in 2010 as the Wounded Warrior Anglers of America. The organization is a legally registered 501(c)(3) public charity that directs more than ninety cents of every dollar from donations to support veterans, helping them enjoy an active lifestyle with a variety of programs, including using the comradery and fun enjoyed through fishing. The high percentage for funding programs is achieved because all board members, executives and staff are volunteers – no one receives a salary or any kind of financial payment or incentive.
Since its establishment, the organization expanded its support to meet the growing needs of veterans including emergency relief, financial assistance, family retreats and other services. We passionately design and provide diverse programs and services with the help of like-minded partners and supporters who believe as we do in “changing lives, one warrior at a time.”
Having a personal understanding of the difficult life situations experienced by disabled veterans, in mid-2010, our founders turned their passion for fishing into a resource for helping Wounded Warriors realize they are still capable of enjoying an active lifestyle after their life changing injuries. At that time, our founders started taking disabled veterans fishing while living on the eastern shore of Delaware.
Due to a work relocation, one of our founders was transferred to Southwest Florida. In early 2011, shortly after visiting the Ft. Myers VA Clinic, he began taking other disabled veterans fishing. He continued his effort for almost a year before moving forward with the concept of making Wounded Warrior Anglers of America a public charity. The original organization held the first Warrior, Caregiver, and Family Retreat in July 2012, and launched our original Warrior, Caregiver, and Family Retreat and Warrior Related programs at that time.
In October 2012, the Wounded Warrior Anglers of America was granted its non-profit status by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a 501(C)(3), enabling the organization to begin officially receiving support through tax deductible donations.
Over the next 18 months — with the help of many different sponsors, individuals, and members – the organization continued helping families within the original programs while beginning to add others including the Alternative Therapy for Veterans Program.
With in-depth knowledge of the overall needs of veterans, in 2014 we expanded our programs to assist Wounded Warriors who were faced with financial hardships within the geographic areas we serve. Our National Board of Directors implemented the Acts of Kindness for Veterans Program, one of the initiatives within our Services for Veterans.
In April of 2015, the Warrior Hand Crafted Rods Program was born within our Alternative Therapy for Veterans Programs. To date it has been a huge success due to partnerships developed among Wounded Warrior Anglers, American Tackle Co., and Big Rock Sports.
Due to expanded programs and services, as well as name confusion, in January 2017 the organization legally changed its name to American Military Veterans Foundation, Inc. It is also legally referred to as AMMILVETS and AMMILVETS FOUNDATION. While continuing to offer existing programs, we work closely with other veterans’ organizations, members, businesses and communities to develop new and innovative programs that benefit and support our proud and deserving veterans.
